So on the news tonight; they are talking about the school in Maine that is going to make birth control available to girls as young as 11 years old without parental notification as long as the parents have signed the consent form allowing children to seek health advice and care at school. The problem is, this is the same consent form they have to sign to allow the school to give the child aspirin if they have a headache. I realize that schools are going to teach safe sex, and probably more intently than they teach abstinence; but do we have to give the kids birth control?
Isn’t that like teaching a little gun safety and then handing out guns to all the kids? They are children; they are not old enough to make those kinds of decisions. It is our job as parents and teachers to make that decision for them.
It is not our job as parents to allow kids to explore their sexuality and be their own people, it is our job to protect them from their own stupid decisions that they make because they cannot begin to comprehend the responsibilities. I don’t say that as a holier-than-thou parent, I say that as a former kid who made a ton of stupid decisions.
